Faridkot, a town in south-western Punjab was the capital town of the erstwhile state of princely Faridkot. Named in the honor of the spiritual poet Baba Sheikh Farid, whose contributions can be traced down in the holy Gurugranth Sahib, the city was founded by Raja Moklasi and originally named Mokalhar.

Legend has it that the Sufi saint once passed the town of Mokalhar during the reign of Raja Mokalsi and was captured and put to bonded labour for the construction of the then-developing Faridkot Fort in Punjab. While during the construction process, the labourers saw a basket full of soil and Earth floating along Baba Farid without any support. Upon seeing this divine revelation, not only was the saint allowed to leave the city but the king also bent and begged pardon. From that day onwards, people began calling the town as Faridkot. This demonstration of miraculous power is said to be one among the many powers of Baba Farid.

• Gurudwara Tilla Baba Farid: As old as the town of Faridkot itself, this is the place where Baba Farid meditated and practiced penance for around 40 days after his release, before he left for Pakpattan (currently in Pakistan). 2 km from the town’s railway station, this 13th-century Gurudwara is located close to Quilla Mubarak, which is our 2^nd stop for the day.
• Quilla Mubarak: Built entirely out of Nanakshahi bricks and lime motor, Quilla Mubarak or what is also known as Faridkot Fort is a well-constructed property built by Raja Moklasi. The interiors possess a unique ambiance drawing definite inspiration from Rajasthani style of architecture, whereas, European influence is pretty-much evident when it comes to the fort’s exteriors.
• Darbar Ganj: Darbar Ganj is a beautifully crafted heritage property which was used by the erstwhile royal family. It’s a nicely done garden place with most of its room exuding a modern style of construction. Currently, it’s being used as the city’s Circuit House and the office of the Faridkot’s Commissioner.
